The gusty wind tried to blow the cobwebs away but 90 minutes against a dogged Newmarket side was exactly the opening game the lads needed.
A depleted squad went behind after 10 minutes after the ref gave them a helping hand with a series of dubious decisions. Debutant keeper Matthew Wilkinson made a fine full length stop but the striker, looking suspiciously offside somehow looped a header home. 0-1.
The ring rust was beginning to loosen up. The lads started popping the ball about and getting into dangerous areas.
But it took a spot kick to bring us level. A fine move down the left resulted in Dylan McAvoy being upended. Craig Hutchinson stepped up and swept the ball high into the top right roof of the net. 1-1.
The lads showed that they were starting to enjoy possession. The best of the chances fell to Craig Hutchinson looking to add another, a trio of quick fire efforts were denied by saves/blocks to ensure that the teams were level at the much welcomed break.
The second half was much more controlled by the Blues. Possession and quick interplay were improving as the game went on.
The second Thornaby goal midway through the the second peroid was a fine team effort. Quick link up play with Steve Roberts at the heart of it resulted in the recent signing from Guisborough being freed down the right. Roberts then fired the cross low and square for Alex Hutchinson to prod home from close range. 2-1.
After that chances came and went. Went very high and wide from Dylan McAvoy from 20 yards and slow & trickling from 1 yard from the desperately unlucky Kieran Mulroy but we had to wait until 4 minutes from time to add to the scoresheet.
A clever flick on the edge of the box from Craig Hutchinson but Joe Pickett through on goal and he forced the ball home at the second time of asking after the keeper denied the attacker the first time. 3-1.
